Pippin

May 15 @ 8:00 pm

Pippin is a 1972 musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Roger O. HirsonBob Fosse, who directed the original Broadway production, also contributed to the libretto. The musical uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe, led by the Leading Player, to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince on his search for meaning and significance. The ‘fourth wall‘ is broken numerous times during most traditional productions.

The protagonist, Pippin, and his father, Charlemagne, are characters derived from two historical figures of the early Middle Ages, though the plot is fictional and presents no historical accuracy regarding either. The show was partially financed by Motown Records. As of January 2024, the original run of Pippin is the 37th longest-running Broadway show.

Ben Vereen and Patina Miller won Tony Awards for their portrayals of the Leading Player in the original Broadway production and the 2013 revival, respectively, making them the first actors to win Tonys for Best Leading Actor and Best Leading Actress in a Musical, for the same role.

The theater is divided into three sections: Floor, Risers, and Balcony. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose the best seat:

FLOOR:

  • All seats are on one level, requiring no stairs.
  • Each row is at the same height, so the view might be limited if you are seated behind taller individuals.
  • Rows C and D may have a restricted view if you’re not tall.

RISERS:

  • Requires climbing 2 shallow steps per row, but there are railings for support.
  • Tiered seating so each row is elevated above the one in front to provide a clear view of the stage.

BALCONY:

  • Access requires climbing a fairly steep set of stairs.
  • Each row is elevated above the row in front to ensure a clear view.
  • There is only a center aisle (between seats 9 and 10). Seats on the ends of each row are next to a wall.

Seating in all sections are padded chairs with backs.  Don’t confuse risers with bleachers.
